A falling water level does not automatically mean a leaking pond.

Before assuming there is a structural leak, consider evaporation, rainfall, splash-out, filter cleaning, backwashing and other deliberate water losses. Measuring the loss over several days gives you a much better starting point than judging the water level by eye.

Why measuring water loss matters

A small daily loss can become a surprisingly large amount over a month. Knowing the actual rate helps you distinguish routine water use from something that deserves further investigation.

It also gives you a useful number when planning automatic top-up systems, water changes and ongoing pond maintenance.

Evaporation versus a possible leak

Evaporation varies with weather, temperature, humidity, wind, sunlight and exposed water surface. A pond with a large exposed surface can therefore lose substantially more water than a compact, sheltered pond.

A persistent loss that changes significantly when equipment is running, filtration is operating or water is being directed through a particular part of the system may justify a more detailed investigation.

Where water loss investigations go wrong

Measuring for only a few hours

Short measurements can be distorted by normal fluctuations. Measuring over several days usually produces a more useful average.

Forgetting routine water use

Filter cleaning, flushing and water changes can look like unexplained loss if they are not recorded.

Ignoring rainfall

Rain can hide a loss during wet weather. If you are trying to identify a possible leak, record significant rainfall during the measurement period.

Assuming every loss comes from the pond shell

Pipework, valves, filters, returns and other parts of the system can also lose water. The pond itself is only one part of the water system.

What your result is telling you

The calculator gives you the amount of water added during the measurement period as the measured water loss, then converts that figure into an average daily loss and a percentage of your pond volume.

The result is an estimate based on your measurements. It does not by itself identify the source of the water loss.

The number worth watching

The daily percentage loss gives you a useful way to compare measurements from different periods. A 100-gallon loss means something very different in a 1,000-gallon pond than it does in a 20,000-gallon pond.

Percentage puts the loss into the context of the system you are actually operating.
