Want to put your water-change figure into context?
A water change is based on volume, but volume is also one of the foundation numbers for the rest of the pond system.
If your pond volume is wrong, calculations for turnover, flow, filtration and other system requirements can also start from the wrong number.
What Your Result Is Telling You
The result is the amount of water represented by the percentage you entered. For example, a 10% change means replacing one tenth of the working pond volume.
The calculator also shows the volume remaining after the planned change. This is useful when thinking about how much water will actually remain in the pond during the process.
Percentage is only part of the calculation
A 10% change in a small pond and a 10% change in a large pond are very different quantities of water. The percentage becomes useful when it is applied to a known working volume.
Use the working volume
If the pond contains shelves, rockwork, plant areas or other features that significantly reduce the actual water volume, use the best available estimate of the water actually contained in the system.
Where Water-Change Planning Can Go Wrong
One common mistake is calculating a percentage from the original construction dimensions and assuming that this represents the actual operating volume.
Another is treating every water change as though the same quantity is appropriate regardless of pond size or circumstances. The calculation tells you the quantity represented by your chosen percentage. It does not decide what percentage is appropriate for every pond.
Water source, water quality, filtration, stocking, maintenance practices and the reason for the water change can all matter when deciding how to manage a pond.
The Question Behind the Calculation
Once you know your pond volume and planned water-change quantity, you have another useful engineering number: the amount of replacement water your system needs to handle.
That can become important when planning storage, supply arrangements, drainage and the practical time required to complete a water change.
