Underlay is a protective layer, not a structural solution. It should not be used to compensate for sharp concrete edges, protrusions, unsuitable ground or poor construction.
The finished surface should be inspected and prepared before the underlay and liner are installed.
▌ Why Underlay Matters
Pond liners are remarkably good at keeping water where it belongs, but they are still flexible membranes. A sharp stone, exposed reinforcement, rough concrete edge or other hard point beneath the liner can become a problem.
Underlay creates a protective layer between the liner and the surface beneath it. The exact product and thickness should be selected for the construction and liner system being used.
Why the calculator includes the walls
In a lined pond, the protective material may need to follow the floor and climb the pond walls. The calculation therefore considers the pond depth as well as the footprint.
Why an edge allowance is useful
Underlay needs to be positioned and trimmed during installation. Allowing material beyond the immediate liner footprint gives you room to work without trying to achieve a perfect cut before the material is positioned.
Irregular ponds need more care
Steps, shelves, curves, bays and unusual corners make a simple rectangular calculation less reliable. The estimator therefore applies a modest planning allowance to irregular shapes.
▌ Before Installing The Liner
Underlay should not be treated as a substitute for preparing the pond correctly. Before installation, inspect the entire surface for anything that could damage the liner.
- Remove sharp stones and debris.
- Check concrete surfaces for sharp projections.
- Check around drains and pipe penetrations.
- Pay particular attention to corners and transitions.
- Make sure the underlay follows the finished pond shape.
- Follow the liner manufacturer’s installation instructions.
▌ Material Planning
The calculated area is useful when comparing rolls, sheets or other underlay products. However, the way the material is supplied can affect how much you actually need to purchase.
A roll that is narrower than the pond may require overlapping sections. Those overlaps can increase the practical quantity compared with the theoretical surface area.
For larger or complicated ponds, lay out the installation on paper first and work out how the material will be joined and positioned.
