▌ What The Calculation Is Doing
A pond liner has to cover the bottom, climb the walls and extend beyond the finished pond edge. The basic calculation therefore adds the depth to the pond dimensions twice, once for each side.
An additional allowance is then added so that the liner can extend beyond the pond edge and be secured.
Why the edge allowance matters
The liner normally needs to extend beyond the finished pond edge. That extra material can be used for securing the liner, forming folds and accommodating small variations in the excavation.
Why deeper ponds need larger liners
Every additional metre of depth effectively adds material to both dimensions of a simple rectangular liner. Depth is therefore just as important as length and width when ordering material.
Why irregular ponds are different
A regular rectangle is straightforward to measure. Curves, shelves, bays and unusual corners make the geometry more complicated and can create additional folds and material requirements.
