Why Future Stocking Matters

Koi grow. That sounds obvious, but it is one of the easiest things to overlook when planning a pond.

A filtration system, aeration system and maintenance routine that comfortably handles a young population may face a very different load once those fish reach larger sizes.

Future stocking calculations help expose that change before it becomes a problem.

  • Future biomass: estimated weight based on the future fish count and average weight entered.
  • Biomass with margin: future biomass plus your selected planning allowance.

  • Biomass increase: how much larger the biological load becomes compared with today.

The margin is not a biological safety factor. It is simply an additional planning allowance that can help prevent designing a system right on the calculated limit.
