What Your Biomass Number Is Telling You
Biomass is simply the combined weight of the fish. It gives you a more useful engineering input than fish count alone.
For example, ten koi averaging 1 kg represent approximately 10 kg of fish biomass. If those same koi eventually average 5 kg each, the pond could contain approximately 50 kg of biomass without adding another fish.
That difference matters because the biological load of a pond changes as koi grow. A pond that appears lightly stocked today can become a very different system several years from now.

- Feeding requirements increase as fish grow.
- Filtration has to cope with the resulting biological load.

One of the most useful checks is to look beyond today’s fish weight. Koi can grow substantially over their lifetime, so the filtration and aeration system should be considered against the intended mature load where practical.
The optional future-weight calculation is deliberately simple. It is a planning exercise rather than a prediction of exactly how large individual koi will become.
If the future figure is dramatically higher than the current figure, that is a reason to revisit your filtration, aeration, feeding strategy and maintenance plan.
