The hole you dig is not necessarily the shape or size of the finished pond. Construction thickness, working room and excavation conditions all affect how much material actually has to be removed.

Before excavating, establish the finished pond dimensions first, then work backwards to the excavation.

Finished pond versus excavation

The difference is where many early estimates go wrong.

The base takes space

If the pond has a structural base, slab, insulation or other construction layer beneath the water space, the excavation needs to continue below the finished water level to accommodate it.

Walls change the footprint

A finished internal width of three metres does not mean the excavation is three metres wide. Wall thickness and the space required to construct the walls both increase the excavation footprint.

Working room is not wasted space

Space around the structure can be necessary for formwork, reinforcement, waterproofing, drainage and safe construction. The actual requirement depends heavily on the construction method.

Excavation volume is not the same as spoil volume

Once soil is excavated, it can expand or bulk up because the ground structure has been disturbed. The volume of loose spoil can therefore be greater than the original volume of soil in the ground.

This matters when estimating skips, haulage, storage space or the number of loads required to remove the spoil from the site.

Where excavation planning can go wrong

Digging exactly to the finished dimensions

This leaves no allowance for the structure itself. The finished internal dimensions and the excavation dimensions are two different sets of numbers.

Ignoring ground conditions

Stable vertical excavation sides cannot be assumed for every soil type or site. Ground stability, groundwater and nearby structures can materially change the excavation method and footprint.

Forgetting access for machinery

A theoretical excavation volume does not tell you whether a digger can reach the work area, where spoil will go or how material will be removed from the site.

Actual excavation requirements depend on the ground conditions, construction method, structural design, access, drainage, temporary support and site constraints.

If the excavation method changes, or if the pond construction changes from a simple vertical-sided arrangement to a sloped or supported excavation, revisit the calculation.
