Concrete volume tells you how much material is required. It does not tell you whether the base or walls are structurally adequate.
Before construction, consider soil conditions, pond dimensions, water loads, reinforcement, ground movement, wall restraint and the way the pond is constructed.
▌ What The Number Means
The calculator separates the concrete into two main quantities: the pond base and the pond walls. These are then combined and an optional allowance is added.
Base concrete
The base quantity is calculated from the internal pond footprint and the specified base thickness. A thicker base increases the quantity directly.
Wall concrete
Wall quantity is estimated from the pond perimeter, wall height and wall thickness. This gives a planning quantity for the four pond walls.
Why add a waste allowance?
Concrete work rarely follows the theoretical volume perfectly. Uneven excavation, small losses, over-excavation and practical site conditions can all increase the amount required. The allowance gives you a planning margin rather than pretending the theoretical calculation is an exact delivery quantity.
▌ Where Pond Builds Go Wrong
One of the easiest mistakes is treating the calculator result as though it were a structural specification. It isn’t.
A pond might contain several tonnes of water. The ground may also impose significant loads on the outside of the walls, particularly where the pond is empty or where surrounding ground conditions change.
Concrete thickness and reinforcement therefore need to be considered as part of the complete structure, rather than simply increased because a larger number feels safer.
