The important number is not simply the pump’s free-air rating. You need enough delivered air at the pressure created by your air lines, diffusers and water depth.

A pump’s advertised air-flow figure is often its free-air rating. Your pond does not operate at free air. Water depth, air-line restriction and diffuser resistance all create back pressure.
The question to ask is: how much air will the pump actually deliver at the pressure your system requires?
The number on the box is not the whole story
Free-air flow versus delivered flow
An air pump may be advertised as delivering a certain number of litres per minute. That figure is normally associated with a particular test condition. Once the pump pushes air down an airline and through a diffuser under water, resistance increases.
Water depth creates pressure
The deeper the diffuser sits, the greater the water pressure the pump must overcome before air can escape through it. This is why two identical pumps can behave very differently on two ponds.
Air-line size matters too
Small or excessively long airlines can introduce unnecessary restriction. The restriction becomes more important as air flow increases. The next calculation lets you examine that part of the system.
Before you buy the pump
Do not select a pump purely from its maximum litres-per-minute figure. Find the manufacturer’s performance information and check the delivered air flow at a pressure at least as high as your calculated operating requirement.
A pump that looks bigger on paper is not necessarily the better pump if it performs poorly at your system pressure.
