A pond does not stop losing heat when the heater switches on
A heated pond is constantly exchanging energy with its surroundings. If the water is warmer than the surrounding environment, heat will continue to leave the pond.
The heater therefore has to replace this ongoing loss if the target water temperature is to be maintained.
The surface is a major part of the equation
The larger the exposed water surface, the greater the opportunity for heat to escape. This is one reason two ponds with similar volumes can have very different heating requirements.
Temperature difference drives heat loss
A pond maintained significantly warmer than the surrounding air has a larger temperature difference and generally loses heat faster than a pond only slightly warmer than its surroundings.
Wind and covers matter
Wind exposure can increase surface heat transfer and evaporation. A cover can reduce the exposed surface and substantially change the practical heating requirement.

The main result is an estimate of the continuous heat input required to offset the calculated losses. It is not a guaranteed heater specification.
Real ponds are affected by many variables, including construction materials, insulation, water movement, evaporation, rainfall, humidity, wind and changing outdoor temperatures.
Use the result as an engineering planning figure and then consider the conditions under which the pond actually needs to operate.
