What this number actually means

The first number is the physics

The calculator first works out the theoretical energy required to raise the pond water through the selected temperature difference.

That calculation is based on the thermal properties of water and the volume of the pond. It gives us the basic heating requirement before real-world losses are considered.

Then reality gets involved

A real pond is not a sealed laboratory tank. Heat is continually being lost to the surrounding environment.

The pond surface, walls, pipework, filtration equipment, weather conditions, wind and evaporation can all affect the amount of heat that needs to be replaced.

That is why a heater selected solely from the theoretical water-heating calculation can be undersized.

Heating faster requires more power

The total energy required to raise the pond temperature is determined by the volume and temperature change.

But the required heater output depends on how quickly you want that energy delivered.

A pond that must gain the same number of degrees in 12 hours requires considerably more heating power than one allowed 48 hours.

Where heater sizing goes wrong

  • Selecting a heater purely from pond volume.
  • Ignoring heat loss from the pond surface.
  • Assuming the theoretical heating energy is the heater’s required output.
  • Forgetting that colder weather can substantially increase heat loss.
  • Choosing an extremely small heater and expecting it to recover temperature quickly.
  • Changing the target temperature without recalculating the heating requirement.
