Manufacturers use different media, test conditions and assumptions when publishing capacity figures. Use this calculator to understand the loading on your system, then compare it with the actual specification for your filter.
What Is Filter Loading?
Filter loading describes the demand being placed on the filtration system. In a koi pond, that demand comes primarily from fish biomass and feeding.
The more fish you keep and the more food you feed, the more waste your biological filtration system must ultimately process. That makes feeding rate an especially useful number when thinking about filtration.
The Number Behind the Fish
Counting fish alone does not tell you how heavily a pond is loaded. Ten small koi and ten large koi can create very different demands on the filtration system.
Biomass
Biomass is the combined weight of the fish. This calculator estimates it by multiplying the number of koi by their average weight.
Feeding rate
Feeding rate provides another useful way to understand biological demand. Food entering the pond eventually becomes part of the biological processing requirement of the system.
Why Pond Volume Can Be Misleading
A large pond is not automatically a lightly loaded pond. A 40,000-litre pond with a small fish population can have a very different biological load from a pond of the same volume carrying a large mature koi population.
Pond volume remains important because it provides dilution and affects hydraulic design, but filtration should also be considered against the actual fish and feeding load.
What Your Result Is Telling You
Low loading
A low calculated loading indicates that the fish biomass and feeding rate are relatively modest compared with the pond volume. It is still important to check the actual filtration specification.
Moderate loading
A moderate loading means the filtration system should be considered carefully alongside flow, biological media capacity and maintenance requirements.
High loading
A high loading means the pond is placing greater biological demand on the filtration system. This is a point where filter capacity, maintenance, oxygen availability and future fish growth deserve particular attention.
What Can Go Wrong?
- Designing filtration around the pond volume while ignoring fish biomass.
- Using the current fish load when the pond is intended to contain much larger fish.
- Ignoring feeding rate when comparing filter capacities.
- Treating a manufacturer’s maximum capacity as a guaranteed biological result.
- Increasing stocking levels without reconsidering filtration and aeration.
- Assuming hydraulic flow and biological capacity are the same thing.
Don’t Forget Future Fish Size
One of the easiest mistakes in koi pond planning is designing around today’s fish rather than tomorrow’s fish.
Koi can grow substantially. A system that appears lightly loaded when the fish are young can become heavily loaded as biomass increases. That is why future stocking deserves its own calculation rather than being treated as an afterthought.
Once you understand the biological load, you need to check whether the filtration system has enough capacity and whether the water can actually move through it at the required rate.

Common Questions
Is more pond volume always better?
More volume can provide useful dilution and stability, but it does not remove the biological load created by a large fish population.
Should I calculate loading using today’s fish size?
For an existing pond, today’s loading is useful. For a new pond or stocking plan, you should also consider the expected mature fish size.
Does feeding matter more than fish count?
Both matter. Fish count alone can be misleading because fish vary enormously in size. Feeding rate provides another practical indication of the biological demand being introduced into the system.
Can this calculator tell me exactly how big my filter must be?
No. It is a planning and checking tool. Actual filter capacity depends on the filter design, biological media, manufacturer’s specifications, loading conditions, maintenance and the rest of the pond system.
