Do not choose a filter from pond volume alone.
Two ponds with the same water volume can have very different filtration requirements. Fish biomass, feeding rate, turnover, filter type and maintenance all affect how much work the filtration system has to perform.
Manufacturer ratings should therefore be treated as part of the selection process, not as the only number that matters.
What Your Result Is Telling You
The calculator starts with your pond volume and target turnover, then applies planning allowances for stocking and feeding load.
Pond volume
This establishes the amount of water in the system. It is the starting point, not the complete filtration specification.
Turnover
Faster turnover means a greater volume of water passes through the filtration system over a given period. The required flow therefore rises as the desired turnover time becomes shorter.
Biological load
More fish and more food generally mean more waste entering the system. The planning factor provides additional capacity when the biological load is higher.
Why Filter Ratings Can Be Confusing
Filter manufacturers may publish ratings based on different assumptions, such as lightly stocked ponds, heavily stocked ponds or different types of fish.
This means two filters with similar headline ratings may not actually provide equivalent filtration capacity for your particular pond.
Always check what assumptions sit behind the manufacturer’s rating.
Flow Matters Too
A filter may have a large stated biological capacity but still require a particular flow range to operate correctly.
Too little flow can affect turnover and system performance. Too much flow can create excessive velocity, bypass, short contact time or other problems depending on the filter design.
The filter therefore needs to be matched to both the biological requirement and the hydraulic system.
What Happens If You Change the Pond?
Adding fish, increasing feeding, changing the turnover target or changing the filtration system can alter the required filter capacity.
If a major design parameter changes, stop and reconsider the downstream calculations rather than assuming the original filter selection still works.
