For example, once you know your volume, you can consider how quickly the pond should turn over and what flow rate that requires.

What Your Result Is Telling You

Your calculated volume is an estimate of the amount of water contained in the pond at its normal operating level.

That figure can influence almost everything downstream. A larger pond generally requires more water to circulate, more filtration capacity and more water for routine changes. A smaller pond can have different hydraulic and biological demands.

The average depth matters

Using the deepest point of the pond as the depth will usually overstate the volume. For a pond with different depths, use a sensible average water depth or divide the pond into sections and calculate each section separately.

Irregular ponds need an estimate

Most real ponds are not perfect rectangles. For a complex shape, breaking the pond into simpler sections can produce a more useful estimate than trying to force the entire pond into one calculation.

Don’t forget the working water level

Calculate the volume at the level the pond normally operates. The volume below the normal operating level is not necessarily the volume your filtration and circulation system actually works with.

What Can Go Wrong?

The most common mistake is assuming that a pond’s advertised or estimated size is its actual working water volume.

Rockwork, shelves, walls, bottom drains, settlement chambers and other features can all change the amount of water in the system.

That matters because an incorrect volume can then feed incorrect numbers into later calculations.
